Country Pancakes

From Wednesday night to Friday night, I’ve been away camping for this scheme called the Duke of Edinburgh Award. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it basically encourages team work, life skills and physical activity for young people. Originally, I didn’t think I’d have the time, but I’m so glad I overruled my first judgement and went.

I enjoyed it a lot. We had to do a relatively large amount of walking; 10k a day. The first day, in our team of 6, we were accompanied by a teacher and had a bunch of laughs. It wasn’t too challenging and thankfully, we didn’t get lost. We did happen to go insane on the top of a hill after taking a so-called short cut which turned out to be a hellcut. But that was still a notably amusing part of the day.

The second day, admittedly, was much harder. There was this huge valley and despite attempting to bribe the teacher at the checkpoint to drive us, we were forced to walk all the way up it. It was an incredibly steep slant > / . We ended up scrambling on all fours just to make it. Then, when at the top, we were greeted by a field of cows, or so we thought. There was this scary one staring at us with its piercing eyes and it wasn’t until one team member had attempted to feed it grass that we realised that it was, in fact, a bull. If my memory serves me rightly, we got out of there swiftly.

All in all it was a good trip. Even the part where I fell over a style flat on my face was funny. I’m really glad it was grass I landed on though. I now have to complete my volunteering and regular physical activity for several months, as well as the final expedition next year and hopefully I’ll complete the Bronze award.

Half term now! But my lovely teachers have given me lots of prep, so I now have to schedule a Romeo & Juliet English essay into my week. Oh joys on earth!

Soph =)
